December 2016

Introduction by Dawn Taylor Owens, executive director, College In Colorado

While shopping on Black Friday in Cheyenne, Wyo., Santa suddenly walked out of a little house in the middle of the mall, ho-ho-ho-ing, much to the delight of the kids lined up to take a picture with him.  Hopped up on caffeine and unable to help myself, I looked at my mom and sister-in-law and yelled, “SANTA!!! I know him!!” I would say that 85 percent of the people within earshot (and there were a lot – I can be loud when I want to be) cracked up, because they got that I was recreating a scene from “Elf.” Other than the scroogie woman who asked me if I had been standing in line all night drinking because “why else would someone yell like that in a shopping mall,” people thought it was hilarious. People were high-fiving us in stores, and my mom commented that she couldn’t believe how many people had seen “Elf.” My sister-in-law said, “It is nice to see something bringing people together for the first time in a month.”

Now please understand that this letter – and my sister-in-law’s comment – is in no way a political commentary. It is simply an opportunity to encourage everyone to find common ground and joy and laughter this holiday season, whether it is in a funny Christmas movie, a trip to the Denver Zoo to see Zoo Lights (an Owens family favorite), or even through going to to do some career planning or postsecondary school planning! OK, I truly don’t expect to see our usage numbers soar in December – there is too much going on – but you get my drift. All of us at College In Colorado are thankful for the support and partnership that all of you show throughout the year, and we wish you a very happy and safe holiday season!

Look for District at a Glance coming soon
