Official launch of WWI Messenger Dogs theatre show for primary schools

Following on from the success of the Victoria's Journey of Remembrance, Anzac Centenary Roadshow, which has reached over 35,000 Victorians in the two years it has been delivered free to secondary schools and communities, a new travelling roadshow will visit primary schools throughout Victoria.

"Messenger Dogs - Tales of WWI" follows the journey of Nell, Trick and Bullet -- three dogs that carried messages between headquarters and the front line. All three dogs saw service with the 2nd, 4th and 5th Australian Divisions. As identities, interacting with their human counterparts, they provide an enormously attractive package of characters which create spectacular on-stage action delivered by actors and puppets. This will provide primary school aged children with a unique non-confronting way of learning about WWI. Their tales in the performance are of courage, determination, endurance and mateship on the frontline working alongside the Australian Imperial Force.

The free puppet show is tailored to students from prep to grade six. The performance also comes with an online educational resource kit to download and each participating student will receive their own commemorative 1919 Children's Peace Medal.

“Messenger Dogs - Tales of WWI” was officially launched on Tuesday, 19 July at Seabrook Primary School, where students were greeted by one of the stars of the new roadshow: Bullet, a Messenger Dog. Dogs played a pivotal role in the war, both to those who served over a hundred years ago and even to those who serve today.

The Veterans Branch, Department of Premier and Cabinet has commissioned Cultural Infusion to produce and deliver this free roadshow as part of the Victorian Government Anzac Centenary program.

Expressions of Interest are now open for "Messenger Dogs - Tales of WWI".
