Whenever I grill, there is always immediate interest from my dog, Sita. I have never fed her around the grill, so I think the interest comes from the close proximity to meat. She is, after all, an opportunistic omnivore with a preference for carnivorous treats.
While I am preparing, meddling about, lighting the charcoal on fire, setting up the grill, she has peripheral interest. She comes out as if to keep an eye on the activity. But, when I bring out the meat, she notably ups her interest. There is a sense that something could happen, somehow there could be an intersection between her keen interest and circumstances.
I think we are all like that. We have something that really concerns us. When it appears, we up our game. We are ready to exploit chances offered by the immediate environment without reference to a general plan or habit.
